Questions to me from TravelLit
1. How long ago did you realize your passion is travelling and how?
As long as I can remember I wanted to explore beyond not just my own back yard, but also beyond my own back yard. I always thought of traveling as a big adventure and couldn’t wait to have my own adventures.
2. If you could have only one thing while travelling, only one, what would it be?
Hmmm, that’s tough. I guess from a usefulness standpoint, I’d probably always take my multi-tool. You just never know when you'll need a screwdriver to tighten a luggage wheel or a knife to slice some delicious bread.
3. Do you prefer warm climates and beaches or cold climates and mountains?
I enjoy both since I scuba dive (warm weather only!) and ski (cold weather naturally!), but I guess if I had to choose, I'd probably say cold climates and mountains.
4. What is one thing that scares you about travelling? What makes you at unease sometimes?
One of the few things that makes me uneasy when I travel is if I don’t feel safe. Fortunately, that doesn’t happen too often. What makes me uneasy? The unknown. It can be both the exciting part of traveling, but it can also be nerve racking.
5. Where do you get your travel inspiration from? Instagram, blogs, Pinterest? How do you find them?
I read…a lot… so whether it’s blogs or news articles, I’m always on the lookout for my next adventure, big or small.
6. Do you ever get homesick? When does the feeling usually hit?
When I lived abroad, I didn’t get homesick at all. Nowadays, I wouldn’t call it “homesick” exactly, but when I'm away, I'm very happy to be traveling, then when I come home, I'm happy to be there, too.
7. What is the single best thing about travelling? ONLY ONE!
There are so many great things about traveling, but the best part for me is that I get to relax. Even though I’m on the go on most trips, I have the chance to have fun and be more spontaneous than in my everyday life. To me, that's relaxing.
8. Are you a natural person or a city dweller? Do you enjoy architecture and cafes or lush greenery?
I enjoy both the city and nature, so it really depends on the type of trip I’m taking. If I’m somewhere where I’m focused on an outdoor activity, like scuba diving, then that’s where I want to be. If I’m specifically visiting a city, then I want to go to museums, visit cafes and take advantage of all the things in the city.
9. What is the most ridiculous and funny thing that has happened to you on the road?
It seems I always have slightly absurd, but funny things happen to me. One of the most memorable was driving into a safari camp in Namibia. After checking in with the park ranger, he asked (what I thought was), “Do you want to see the biggest bed in Africa?” I thought, “What’s so great about the biggest BED in Africa, but what the heck?” Well, as we followed him, I realized, I had totally misunderstood his accent. While I was looking for this giant bed, I saw an enormous bird! He hadn’t asked if we wanted to see the biggest bed in Africa, he asked if we wanted to see the biggest BIRD! It’s still makes me laugh!
10. Which country would you say have the happiest, kindest, most welcoming people?
People have been pretty nice to me just about everywhere, but I thought the nicest people were in the country of Palau. They don’t just look out for each other, they look out for visitors, too. You can tell family is really important to them, but that material things aren’t and they don’t seem to sweat the small stuff.
11. On the spot, right now. What would be your ideal travel route for 12 months on a low budget?
Another tough question. I think it would be awesome to visit the Balkan countries then make my way into Turkey, then through Azerbaijan, Georgia and finally through Russia. How fun would that be?
